The Great Gatsby Essay

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a story about a rich man named Jay Gatsby and is told by Nick Carraway. Nick Carraway is just like a normal guy and he becomes friends with Gatsby. Nick Carraway functions The Great Gatsby because he tells the story from his point of view on things. Nick also functions the story because he shows us Gatsby's life and if we didn't no his name then the story would be totally different.
Nick is telling the story from how he see's it and this is important because it shapes the story. For example Nick explains everything on how it is from his eyes and it would change the story completely if it was told by another character. For example, if Gatsby was telling the story we would see everything from his perspective and the story would change because it would contain different information on other characters and events that happened.
Nick also functions the story because he goes into Gatsby's life for us. An example of this is when Nick is invited to Gatsby's party and Nick does not see him. This shows us that Gatsby does not care for his guests and has other important things to do besides mingling with his guest. Another example is when Nick gets Gatsby to explain how he has feelings for Daisy. This allows us to see that Gatsby cares about some one other than himself and that he will do anything for her.
None of this would make any sense if we new nothing about Nick. This is because we learn about Nick's life as much as Gatsby's life. If we did not no Nick then there would just be a random character in the story. We would also be left out throughout the story because we would get no information on him at all.
Nick Carraway is a great narrator for this book because he explains the story really well from his point of view. He also shows us how Gatsby lives and how it would be different if we did now know his name.
