1. One symbol that I found was the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon symbolizes love and happiness in the story. The referent of this is that pink ribbon is something you put on close. This interpretation will help me understand the story because the pink ribbon is the only thing that gives Goodman Brown hope because it is the only thing good that stands out in a bright color.
2.Another symbol that I got was the staff that the old man had with him. The staff symbolizes the devil because the staff has carved snake figures around it and the snakes are the devil. The referent of this is a stick that helps people walk. This interpretation helps me understand the story more because the old man with the staff is really the devil and he is trying to bring Faith towards him and away from good.
3. Young Goodman Brown's wife Faith is also a symbol. She symbolizes goodness and Heaven. The referent of Faith is a character in the story Young Goodman Brown. This interpretation helps me understand the story more because Faith and the Old man are good vs evil. They are like God and the devil.
4. Another symbol is when Young Goodman Brown enters the forest. It says that the forest was gloomy and he had taken a dreary road. This symbolizes his journey into hell. The referent of the forest is a place full of trees. This interpretation helped me understand the story because it shows that Goodman Brown was entering a bad place and would com across a lot of bad things that he would not expect.
5. Young Goodman Brown also symbolizes something and he symbolizes goodness. He symbolizes goodness because he is the one trying to get Faith away from the old man's power. The referent of Young Goodman Brown is that he is a character in a story. This interpretation helps me understand the story because it shows me that Young Goodman Brown is good and just wants his wife Faith to be good as well.
6.The winding path that Young Goodman Brown has to take also has symbolism. The winding path symbolizes how tricky it will be to return from the evil forest and the old man's power. The referent to this is that it is just a windy road with a lot of turns. This interpretation helped me understand the story because it show that the path that Brown is going to take in the forest will be hard.

This interpretation helps me understand the story because is shows that Brown is losing his faith and may never get it back.
8. Another piece of symbolism is the cloud. The cloud symbolizes hopelessness because when Young Goodman Brown looked up to pray the cloud blocked the sky. The referent of a cloud is a shape in the sky that contains moisture. This interpretation helped me understand the story because it shows that Brown is hopeless and feels alone.
9.The trees in the story symbolize destruction and darkness because Brown could not see where he was going because of all the trees. The referent of a tree is an object that grows in the ground. This interpretation helped me understand the story because it shows that Brown is lost and does not know what to do.
10.The unhallowed alter symbolizes unholiness. In the story Young Goodman Brown and Faith were unsure whether or not to choose Heaven or hell.
