BQ: First Steps

Do video games help us?
Many people say that video games are bad for us and we shouldn't play video games because it is a waist of time. I would have to say that it helps us.
I am going to get the information to find out if playing video games helps us by Google searching it. I am also going to go to technology web sights and see what they think about it. I will also ask people if they think video games helps us and compare how many yes's and no's I got.

I am going to post two questions because I don't know which ones to use.

1. Does Big Foot exist? Many people claim to have seen one but it has never been proven.

2. Do video games help us?

The medium is the message

After watching the movie I discovered that the movie is not that different from the story. In the story the Schoolmaster Crane does not beet the kids in class. He actually just hits the desk very hard with something and it gets there attention. Also in the end the Headless Horseman just scares him a lot and leaves him to run alone in the forest.

"Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

One story telling technique that I found was diction. Just in the first couple of paragraphs the diction shows the tone of the story really well. The diction is used to show that the author is going for a scary theme because he describes the headless horseman and it is creepy to picture that in my head.

"Legand of Sleepy Hollow" Vocab/First Impression

So far I think that "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is interesting because this isn't something that I normally read. I think that it is going to be creepy because of the first couple of pages. It introduces the character on the horse with no head and that it just weird to think about and picture.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Blair Witch Project seem like they are real and like its actually happening. Both of these seem like they would be scary just from the word choice.

Presidential Debate Logical Fallicies

First of all I think that Obama won this debate because he answered all of his questions and Romney just talked around some of his questions.

Throughout the debate argument ad numeron was being used constantly because both the President and Romney kept going to numbers to help support there statements.
Verecundiam is also used and the example used is when President Obama told Romney that he does not have power to make war decisions.
Circulus in Demonstrando was also used and an example was during the beginning of the debate and both President Obama and Romney kept going back and forth about Iraq and they were getting nowhere with that topic.

I am in a group with Whitney Houg Sarah Stevens, Ethan Clardy, and Connor Albright.

Remix Emerson's Self Reliance

Emerson's Self Reliance essay is basically pointing out that we need to be our own person and not let people control us and make us into something that we are not. We are born as an individual but are raised and taught to do things in certain ways. As you get older we begin to let society control us because we start to do things that are cool and popular and it may not be what you want to do but you do it anyways to be cool. We are also becoming more dependent on things as we grow up because we can't do things for ourselves  and the things become apart of our daily lives. Computers, phones, and t.v.'s are just a few examples of things that we depend on because we have to use them everyday.  We don't need people to control us and tell us what to do. We can live by ourselves but we can go to people for help to get advise, but in the end you have to make your own decision that is best for you. In all just make sure that you are not being controlled and be your own person and make sure that you are happy.

David Guetta Movie

Uriel and Ricky basically explained how are class is related to the movie. In the movie David Guetta did something that no artist had ever done before and it turned out to be a big thing that changed his life. This is related to our class because we are doing things differently and I think that it will benefit most of us in the long run.

Dream Within a Dream

2. While I was on my walk I was thinking of a few different things. The first thing that came into my head was baseball. I was thinking how I could better myself so that way I become a better better. The next thing to come into my head was how quiet everything was when I was walking by myself. It was very peaceful. I was also thinking of my Cousin Serinna who is in Palm Springs. Her husband is in the Marines there and  I was just thinking and hoping that they both stay safe. The last thing to come to my head was the camping trip we always take and  I was just thinking of how fun it was.

Dream Within A Dream

From the poem I got that the author puts himself in the poem. The author also puts his own feelings and talks about them in the poem. The poem is also about nature and it makes us feel like everything is calm. It is also about love because he is willing to put his personal feelings inside the poem.

Revision/Strategy

My plan to do better for the next essay is to go over everything more so that way it is fresh in my head. Another thing that I am going to do is look at what types of examples I can use so that way I can use better ones to make my essay flow more. I will also have to work more on my intro and make it better so that way my essay's make more sense. My last thing that I will have to do is to work on time management because I was running short on time during this essay.

Fictional Book

The fictional book that I chose to read was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The reason I chose The Hunger Games is because I want to compare it to the movie and see what is different and similar. Every time I read a book and watch the movie they are totally different and the movies don't reveal as much as the books do.

While reading meaning, signs, and symbols I, II, and III I was a bit confused on what it was really trying to show me. After the lesson today I understood more about them. From the lesson I got that a symbol is a special kind of sign and they are usually intentional. A sign is is just something that makes us think of something else.

Young Goodman Brown Symbolism Question

I do not think that the symbolism in Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" is the most important thing that I have learned. I do not think that this is the most important thing that I have learned because I think that there is a lot more important things in the world than a story that basically retails the story of Adam and Eve. It is also not that good of a story and I do not think that it is that interesting and this is another reason why it is not that important.

Vocabulary #3

The essay was vary encomium on the young man.

Young Godman Brown/Meaning Signs and Symbols

1. One symbol that I found was the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon symbolizes love and happiness in the story. The referent of this is that pink ribbon is something you put on close. This interpretation will help me understand the story because the pink ribbon is the only thing that gives Goodman Brown hope because it is the only thing good that stands out in a bright color.

2.Another symbol that I got was the staff that the old man had with him. The staff symbolizes the devil because the staff has carved snake figures around it and the snakes are the devil. The referent of this is a stick that helps people walk. This interpretation helps me understand the story more because the old man with the staff is really the devil and he is trying to bring Faith towards him and away from good.

Online Security

The things that I learned from the online security presentation is that pop ups are bad and the best way to avoid them is to be smart. Don't click any of the adds that pop up because those are the easiest ways to get the pop ups. If you need to close anything just click the red X in the corner to close them and it always works. Another thing that I learned is don't put anything personal online and make sure that your passwords don't have anything close to your personal life. This will help me guide me in a safer way of using electronics because it will help prevent me from doing something that will give any personal information to the open.

Young Goodman Brown Answers

1. I think that Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story is to show us that are dreams affect are lives in big ways. I am saying this because Goodman Brown took his dream seriously and had nothing written on his tombstone.
2. After reading the story I do agree that Brown's wife was aptly named Faith. No, Faith's name does not fit her peronality because she was unsure in which side to follow. No, brown does not have true faith in her because Faith was not sure if she should follow God or the devil.
3. I think that the pink ribbons signify peace or happiness because those are the only things in the story that represent goodness.

Young Goodman Brown

Im going to start of by saying that this was one of the most confusing stories that I have ever read. One observation that I got was that none of it was real, it was just a dream that Goodman had. Another observation is that Goodman took his dream so serious that he had nothing put on his tombstone. My last observation that I got is that Goodman goes towards Faith when everyone has been corrupted because he wants nothing bad to happen to her. He wants her to stay Godly.

Tone and Mood Earth on Turtle's Back

The tone which is the author's attitude toward the characters or audience in Earth On Turtle's back is encouraging because all of the animals are hoping that one of them will reach the bottom and find earth. The mood which is the emotional state of the reader is happy because we are happy once we find out that the muskrat reaches the surface with earth in her hands. Another mood can be melancholy because all of the strongest animals fail and the smallest animal says he will go or die trying.

Certain times when your opinion is not even heard of by an older person with more authority.
Have to make sure that you say something that is not going to hurt the other person.
It's your opinion so its what you think.
Depends on the situation and how you use and say your opinion.

Reflections On Week 1

1. No, there are not any factors that are going to affect my participation in this class. I have access to a computer and internet at all times.
2. The best learning experience that I have had was in the 8th grade. I had joined the AVID program and it was the best experience of my life. AVID tought me how to become a better leader and how to think and do things in different ways than I have ever done before. The people that were with me were and still are some of my closest friends that I have today.
3. I am most excited to learn how to improve my writing skills and I am concerned about the public speaking because I do not like to speak in front of the class. The thing that I look forward to in learning is improving my knowledge on what I already know. This will make a difference in my life because it will better myself from other people in the world.

Assignment #1

The reason I am taking this course is because I was in honors english last year and did not want to take Ap english this year. I still wanted a challenge though and my guidance tech. recommended that I have you as a teacher so I did. To be honest I am not that excited about taking this english class, english has never been my strongest subject and that is another reason why I decided to take regular english instead of Ap. The things that are going to make me nervous this course is when we have to present in front of the class because I do not like to speak in front of large groups.
My goals for this course are to become a better speaker and to become better at memorizing things like the "Richard Cory" speech. Another goal that I would like to master is my writing skills because they are not that good.
The impovements that I want to make in this course are my speaking and writing skills.

Extra Credit

One thing that I want to improve on this year is my writing skills. They have never been that good and I am hoping that this class will help me develop stronger writing skills. This course will also help me because I have a different teacher and his style of teaching may be the way that helps me understand writing the most. In this course I believe that we will do a lot of writing and that will be another way I can improve because I will always be working on my writing skills. I hope that this course improves my writing so that way I can do well when I have future writing assignements.

Vocabulary Quiz # 1 Redux

This week of school was good and I hope that I burgeon in english as the year goes on. I hope that in the future my teachers do not become curmudgeon because then school wont be as fun. The Apotheosis of my week was on Friday because my classmates and I in welding already starting going into the shop. I also learned that my teacher's do not accept contumacious students. I also had to take another class so I decided to take a T.A class and it complemented my schedule. In the future I hope that we have some bauble assignments so that way we can focus on other classes and have a little break in the class. I hope that the way my teacher's didactic are good because I want teacher's that explain things well. The right to your own opinion article gave me an adumbrate on my rights because you have to basically watch what you do because you may not know if what you are doing is ok to do. I hope that I Ascent by the year ends so that way I don't stay at the level that I am at now. So far this week has been good and I have been a  beguile to some people.
